Senior Brand Designer

For 10 years, FourthCanvas has worked with good people to build great brands. Now the stakes are rising, and we have a bigger opportunity to set the new standard for businesses in Africa.

We are looking for an experienced Brand Designer who cares deeply about the work, the people and the reason we do what we do. Here’s what this looks like on a random late Tuesday afternoon:

  • A little more than basic decency. You are not only being polite, you are genuinely thoughtful and considerate of others.
  • Creative courage. You do not wait for precedence to make a direction feel valid. You are able to lead a direction no one has followed before, without hiding behind what is already familiar.
  • Eye for detail. You sweat the small stuff because you know brand design rises or falls on the tiny details. You catch what others miss, and you care enough not to let it slide.
  • Documentation. You communicate thoughtfully and document clearly, not as a formality to get through, but because you recognise its role in keeping everyone aligned and making great work repeatable.
  • Growing, insatiable taste. You read widely, consume knowledge in volume, and keep seeking out better work, better references, and better ways to think — never settling, never satisfied.
  • Disciplined work-rate. You know great design is not just flair. It takes patience, judgement, repetition, and restraint. You are willing to stay with the work until it becomes what it needs to be.
  • Respect for the perspective of others. You’ve seen firsthand how the work gets better when different perspectives meet and are genuinely considered, especially the ones unlike yours.
  • High proficiency. You have real technical fluency and can develop ideas confidently across different tools and software environments. It helps if your practice extends into any or some of motion, 3D, illustration, and other adjacent disciplines.

Role & Responsibilities

We need you to lead the visual identity component of our client branding projects, translating strategy into world-class identity systems with deep Care and inspiring leadership.

  • Work with the guidance of the Project Director and brand strategists to translate the client’s vision into clear creative direction, expressed by mood-boards or similar tools.
  • Lead creative sprints and exercises: brainstorming, territory exploration, rapid prototyping, sketch exploration, refinement, and more.
  • Develop and refine visual identity assets and systems (logo/wordmark, typography, colour, layout, iconography, image/illustration direction, etc.) that people can actually use and build upon over time.
  • Prepare and present work confidently and clearly — guiding stakeholders through choices, trade-offs, and the thinking behind the work.
  • Work day-to-day with the Project Manager to stay on track with deadlines and the overall timeline.
  • Mentor junior designers and collaborate with peers: delegating, coaching, and reviewing ongoing work to keep standards consistently high.
  • Ensure attention to detail and consistency, across execution, file management, documentation and client handover.
  • When off client work, contribute to the firm’s brand needs: proposals, case studies, marketing assets, and website/social templates that improve our own outlook.
